About the practice

A small practice that has been here a long time

Painted Post Family Dentistry has operated out of the same building on Hamilton Street since 1985. Two dentists, four hygienists, and a front desk that recognises voices on the phone.

How the practice came to be

Dr. Harold Mensch opened this practice in 1985 in what had been a chiropractor's office. He ran it for thirty-one years, and by the time he retired he was seeing the grandchildren of patients he had started with. When Dr. Marisa Elwood bought the practice in 2016, she kept the building, the staff, and most importantly the pace. A lot of practices that change hands get quietly turned into something that runs on volume. This one did not.

What that means in practice is boring and specific. A new patient exam is scheduled for a full hour rather than the twenty minutes that is common. Hygiene appointments are fifty minutes. There is no quota for treatment presented per day, because a quota is exactly how patients end up being sold crowns they did not need.

What to expect at a first visit

Your first appointment is a conversation before it is anything else. We will ask what brought you in, what your history has been like, and whether anything about dental treatment makes you anxious. That last question is not a formality. Roughly a third of the people who walk through the door tell us they have been putting the visit off, sometimes for years, and knowing that changes how we proceed.

After that comes a full examination: digital x-rays, a look at every tooth and existing restoration, a gum health assessment with measurements recorded so we have a baseline to compare against next time, and an oral cancer screening. If you have not had a cleaning in a while, we will usually do the exam first and book the cleaning separately, because trying to compress both into one appointment is how things get missed.

You will leave with a written summary of what we found and, if anything needs doing, a written estimate with your insurance benefit already applied. Nobody will ask you to make a decision at the desk.

What we believe about dental care

Most problems are cheaper and easier when they are small. That is the entire argument for regular check-ups, and it is why we would rather see you twice a year for something short than once every five years for something long.

Watching is a legitimate treatment plan. Not every dark spot on an x-ray needs a filling this month. Some do, and we will say so clearly. Others can be monitored and photographed and re-checked, and if that is the honest answer, that is the answer you will get.

You should know the number before you agree. Surprise dental bills destroy trust faster than almost anything else. Denise handles estimates and she would genuinely rather spend twenty minutes on the phone with your insurer beforehand than explain a bill afterwards.

The building itself

We are at 142 Hamilton Street, Suite 2, Painted Post, NY 14870. There is free parking directly outside, a step-free entrance from the lot, and a ground-floor treatment room for patients who cannot manage the short flight of stairs to the upper operatories. If you need that room, mention it when you book and we will make sure it is free.

Come and meet us

You are welcome to come in and look around before booking anything. Plenty of people do.
